The Sweetest Editor of Them All

Saturday, June 5, 2010
On Miss Saturday Morning, we try to deliver the best in fashion. Although we haven't been around for too long, we've showed you some hot looks, cool collaborations, and stylish parties, and today is our proudest Saturday morning yet. Today we bring you an interview from the Editor-at-Large of DailyCandy, a fabulous website that, once you subscribe (it's free!), will send you emails with ideas regarding food fashion, beauty, home, and nightlife in many cities around the United States and the UK including Miami, New York, and London. She recently modeled in the advertisements for fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi's spring/summer 2009 line for Liz Claiborne, and to round off this impressive resume, she also does style features on The Today Show. So here today we bring you the sweetest editor we know:
Miss Dannielle Kyrillos.

As Editor-at-Large at DailyCandy, what is a typical day for you?

The best part about having the words, “at large” in my title is that they indicate it’s my job to be out and about, seeing the latest and greatest with my own eyes and spreading the word about DailyCandy. So no two days are identical.  A big part of my role is contextualizing DailyCandy’s content into neat little packages that become television segments.  I go on shows like “Today,” “E! News” and local morning news programs to talk about our most recent discoveries.  Each day is a mix of developing new ideas, creating segments, preparing to take them on TV and actually performing them on camera.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m secretly a little bit of a hippie, and I love to travel, so “luxe bohemian” might be a good description.  I love textiles from around the world, ethnic-inspired patterns, rich embroidery and easy silhouettes.  I’m obsessed with vintage clothing because it connects us to other eras and other people’s histories. I feel like each of our outfits is a costume for the day, and our choices depend on what we’re up to.  Entertaining friends?  Hostess costume.  Biking in the park?  Parisian girl in the 1960s costume.  Visiting a new city?  Global sophisticate costume.

Who are your design influences/favorite designers?

Way back in the 1960s, there was a gorgeous woman named Talitha Getty, wife of billionaire oil heir John Paul Getty, who epitomized global, boho elegance, and she’s a real style inspiration to me. She lived in Morocco for a time and made caftans glamorous. Modern designers like Isaac Mizrahi and Catherine Malandrino, who make pretty things that make women feel feminine but not fussy, are favorites. I love dresses, and a neat Russian lady named Yoana Baraschi makes really wearable pieces that look super in pictures and on television.

What was it like to work with Isaac Mizrahi?

He is such an amazing person: kindhearted, hilarious and whip-smart, and he makes everyone around him feel good and shine in whatever they’re doing.  Every time I work with Isaac I learn something incredibly useful, and I have a blast doing so.

You appeared in an advertisement for the spring/summer 2009 Liz Claiborne line designed by Isaac Mizrahi. What did you learn about the fashion industry from the experience?

That was one of the most fun things I’ve ever been lucky enough to be a part of.  It taught me that so many more people are involved in producing one dress, or one advertising photo, than you can possibly imagine.  Even if one man conceptualized the dress, the overall effort is collaborative.  That ad campaign was shot by the famous fashion photographer, Arthur Elgort, so getting to know him and be a part of his work for a day or two was the best part.  It takes a crew of nearly one hundred people to produce such a campaign, from the photographer’s assistants to the stylists to the people who block off the sidewalk to the people who cater everyone’s lunch!

When choosing things to talk about for DailyCandy, what are your criteria?

It’s our job as DailyCandy editors to introduce our readers to things that surprise and delight them, so we look for fashion, accessories, food, home décor, beauty products and random fun stuff that is new, different, intriguing, playful, but most of all useful.  We want to discover items that make life more colorful, more fun, but especially more convenient.  I love when we write about a fashion line that is really a one-woman operation, and hearing that she was overwhelmed by the response from our readers.  That’s why we do it!

Any last words?

The most important thing anyone can wear is self-confidence.  If you wear what you like and what makes you feel good, you will look good.  Never be afraid of what anyone says, and never take anything too seriously.
